Cold sores, also called fever blisters, are painful small blisters that affect the lips or the skin around the mouth. You may detect that you are starting to form this skin infection because it feels itchy and painful. As these fluid-filled blisters affect the mouth, it can be embarrassing and discomforting to the sufferer. These lesions can also last for days until weeks.

Cold sores are created when the herpes virus replicates on your lip, face, or nose. Most of the time, the virus is dormant - hiding below the surface in the nerve root cells. But it sleeps with one eye open - watching for the right conditions for successful replication. And it will move fast when the opportunity arises.

It may also be caused by certain kind of allergy such as hay fever. Kids who have over sensitivity to pollen, animal dander, dust mites and grass may also have this condition. Sometimes environmental factors can trigger this condition such as certain harsh chemicals that we use (shampoo, soaps, chlorine) and the pollutants in the air (smoke).
