Motivating Employees

By Alfred at 2009-10-12 02:17:04
Simple things like a round of applause for a particular accomplishment will work wonders for motivating employees. You could also be more creative by awarding trophies or plaques for "Employee of the Month". Take a look at "365 Ways to Motivate and Reward Your Employees Every Day: With Little or No Money", an e-book for some good ideas.

If your own attitude and actions support productive and respectful employee relationships, you will get an A motivation rating with your employees who want supportive relationships from both their managers and peers. The camaraderie from this style will be the glue that raises morale or the organization’s motivation.

One great way of motivating employees is to stress the importance of their continued learning and to offer ways for them to keep learning. Offering inhouse training or enabling staff to choose selected training courses that the company will pay for are two ways to ensure that staff remain in touch with your business while also illustrating that the company values its employees. Ensure that your staff understand company goals and results.

If all or most of your employees are assigned the same basic tasks, such as retail associates in a store, then developing a reward system is easy. Set targets for overall sales (minus refunds) or specific items or even amount per transaction and reward individuals who meet the target. If everyone meets the goal, it is too low -- you are trying to motivate excellent performance.

First employees have to believe that their efforts are needed, and then they have to understand how they can help. Establishing expectations and goals for your staff will serve you well. Providing employees with a plan of action and objectives to strive for will assist them in channeling their energy and skill-sets toward accomplishing the tasks ahead.

Building a challenge-motivating culture can be difficult for some entrepreneurs. The same self-assurance and drive to do things right that makes an entrepreneur successful can also make it difficult to trust employees to work on their own. But, if you plan to grow your business, you will have to rely on your staff to do things right on their own

Creating an environment that feeds contribution-oriented works begins with the company culture. Especially in small and growing businesses, it is important to nurture loyalty. Establishing a culture of teamwork and solidarity will accomplish both -- all staff members will feel more connected to your company and team-motivated workers will have their needs met as well.

Developing a creative, unbiased survey takes skill and know-how. A survey's style should take into account the work environment, the industry and the ultimate purpose of the questioning. It should also follow a format that has been proven by professionals to be effective.

Your leadership style, and rewards and recognitions as a system, are the two most controllable and changeable factors you can effect to create a motivating environment for employees whether you want happier customers or a more productive team.

Those employees who are particularly purpose-driven generally will not be satisfied with pushing the company agenda. They can, however, be motivated by what the company does for the greater good. Choose a charity or three that are meaningful to you and your staff and brainstorm ways to support them.
